The use of medical quarantine was increased during the Industrial Revolution. In 1889, quarantine was enforced following the 1889 Public Health Act. Quarantine was first introduced in 1893 by the Isolation Hospitals Act soon after a smallpox outbreak. Therefore, quarantine protected the community from the spread of a greater outbreak and increased death.
