The Smallpox vaccine was developed by Edward Jenner in 1748, but was not tried until 1805. The Smallpox vaccine helped stop the spread of Smallpox throughout out the mills, but not before Smallpox had already killed more than 50 million people. Smallpox was common in the mills because the mill owners disregarded the development of the vaccine.
